Oops, answered this in a different response. I think I've gotten to 18 or 19. The difficulty is that in addition to the space issues I mentioned above, when you get into the teens it takes about a half hour per level, so unless I'm using the same computer I can't just pick up where I left off and instead have to go all the way through the levels again and that takes forever. I guess if I were consistent as to my computer and browser I could probably get to a higher level.

There's a small, right facing arrow in the left hand corner of the large window that allows you to skip to a particular level.

I think he just added that. Of course, if you skip levels, your score isn't as high, but for me, it's the thrill of completion that matters more than a high score. With TextTwist, however, I live for the high score--mine is just over 3 million so far, but only because I had to reboot the computer. I might just have to give in and buy the full version, if it allows you to save a game in progress.
