Glacier Bay, Alaska
July, 2007
The furthest north and the furthest west I've ever been. Taken by a fellow passenger.
Turbulence
The black "S" shape at the bottom of the glacier is an example of glacial turbulence. A layer of dirt and silt, picked up at a wider part of the channel, was forced to overlap itself at a lower part of the channel.
Something I wasn't able to get a picture of was an under-glacier river of liquid water, just to the left of the bottom of the S. It was rushing quite heavily, but too far away to get with the lens I had.
Margerie Arch
An arch sculpted by different melt rates.
Calving
We figure this is more than half a mile away from where we stood.
