Here are some pictures of [livejournal.com profile] kate_schaefer's bridal hats. I'm not quite as satisfied with them as the previous set, but they're still fairly decent.;>

They're perfectly fine photos, but I think if you decide to re-shoot any of those hats you might try a different background fabric. Pale satin and pearls against more pale satin lacks contrast, so the hats don't "pop" against the ground. You might even try a black velvet backdrop for real drama (though black velvet is a gigantic pain, because it shows every possible speck and spot of lint.

Luke suggested black velvet, but I made the sign of the no-no-no! against the idea. Black velvet lint anywhere near whitework? No way. You have no idea how obsessive I am about keeping my sewing area whitewhitewhite when I'm working with white fabric.

It would make for cooler looking pictures, but it wouldn't be worth it in terms of what it would do to the objects themselves.

Huh. Why on Earth are you doing the photo sessions down in the basement? It would not have occurred to me that you were doing the photography anywhere even remotely near the work area. Among other things, you don't have any natural sunlight down there, and natural light is a huge help in good product photography, if you can use it. Or are you saying you don't want black velvet anywhere in the house when you're working with white?

No, of course we didn't have the photo sessions in the basement. I'm saying I don't want black velvet near the whitework at any time in the life cycle of the object while I have control of it, and necessarily the black velvet would be adjacent to the whitework if it were used as the background. I mentioned my work area obsessiveness merely as illustration of how careful I try to be.

Ah, I see. Well, each her own and all that. In that case you might consider a matte dark ground fabric that doesn't lint -- microfiber, ultrasuede, or even real suede. You just aren't doing the presentation of your work any favors by shooting it against a fabric with the same sheen and value as the hats themselves. Ideally product photography should show the product to best possible advantage.
