Garage at Night: color and black and white.

Which, if either, do you prefer? Thanks!

Color. Nice golden light.

Hah! It's a tie! (see below). I can't make up my mind either.

Thanks!

Hmm. Neither picture conveys "night" to me at all. So my mind engages the night/not-night conflict between the title and the pictures.

When I look at the color photo, I focus on its lush, creamy tone. When I looks at the black and white photo, I focus on the shapes and patterns.

I prefer the black and white photo because I like looking at shapes and patterns more.

Thanks! It's hard for me to decide. And I'm not surprised I got two different votes.

(If it had been daytime, all the light would have been coming from outside th garage, and you wouldn't have been able to see as far into it.)

Color. I like the shading.

Thanks! I think it's beginning to lean toward color. Yeah!

Definitely colour - the range of tones is much wider.

Did you just hit 'desaturate' for the B&W? Digital B&W can look very flat unless some care is taken with the conversion. Playing around with gradient scales, curves and channel mixing can make all the difference...

Hope you don;t mind but I took the liberty of doing my own B&W conversion:

Image

I used a grayscale gradient map, then tweaked the contrast curve (darker darks, winder range of grays), then upped the yellow very slightly in the midtones to give it some depth.

I did a LITTLE more than just desaturate, but not much. I think a good black and white conversion is worth taking the time and effort to get a decent range of tones. Yeah! Thank you for showing me this. Yeah!

I would normally go for the black and white in repetitive images like this; however that's such a nice warm colour range you have in the other one it's a pity to lose it.

In others words, I'm sitting on the fence on this one.

I think I'm starting to slip over to the "color" side. Thanks for speaking up, though!

i liked the color one too, just because it is such a great warm color. i can see that in a lot of situations i would have preferred the black and white, though.
