I wait by this doorway twice a day, it's at the transfer point of my bus rides to and from work.

Hm. I can't place it. Looks like a punk hobbit hole in the side of a hill! Does the graffitti say Frodo Lives?

Hah! No, I don't know what the graffiti says.

It's near the big bus stop on the north side of Campus Parkway, for buses heading out of the U District.

I like the idea of it being a punk hobbit hole.

I still really can't picture where this is! It's bugging me.

I'll show it to you sometime. It's heavily obscured by the stuff growing around it. The Snappleb bottle is gone, but the bed frame part is still there.

Well, I made a point of checking it out on my morning break today. I've walked by that door a zillion or so times without ever noticing it. Good job picking out a fascinating detail from the urban collage. It's like a secret world in there.

Funny thing is, that house turns out to hold the offices of the UW Combined Fund Drive, which raises funds for United Way. I had no idea -- and am kind of surprised -- that the UW had set aside an office for this effort. So that's another secret world revealed!

I find it a very moving and spiritual picture: the promised refuge of the door that is abandoned, defaced, and blocked by garbage.
