I decided to try the Orton technique because the light that works best with it (soft and indirect) is the kind of light we have here in the winter.
And, yes, I've intentionally avoided flowers as a subject because they're so pretty to begin with, it's hard to take anything but a good picture of them.

It works very well with soft, indirect light, I think. Which is, ta da, the light in my apartment!
