First I used the Extract tool, which only works on flat 8 bit images, following the recipe in Scott Kelby's "The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers."
Then I spent hours cleaning up the Extract tool's mistakes.
Basically, getting a table top studio with a black velvet backdrop would be much faster and easier. ;>
