Lord, make us intruments of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is discord, union;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that we may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

(I was reminded of this by a query in [livejournal.com profile] elisem's journal.)

You might want to add that the prayer is commonly attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, although scholars don't think he actually wrote it.

I haven't read elisem's LJ yet. I'm curious to see what prompted this.

You just have ;>. St. Francis of Assisi is my confirmation saint, but I don't remember what that entails.

I've only become aware of it in the last couple years. What I like is that it offers a guide to being human, it calls us to bring forth those qualities.

And reminds me that there are some religious thinkers out there who are also thoughtful caring people. Sometimes I find myself forgetting this.
