So is the rope intentionally tied in Celtic knots, or does it just look like it is?

The story I made up for myself (on seeing the rope) is that Celtic knotwork, the design element, originated in these patterns or laying rope out for storage. This story may have little or no resemblance to reality.

Looking at it again, you may be right. I thought it looked like it would unravel easily, but now I think not.
